The Monk of Mokha

Let me start off by saying that I am not a fan of biographies for the simple reason that not everything in a person’s life will be interesting,,,or so I thought until I read this book. Just about every minute of this book kept me engaged and wondering what would happen next. And to say that it is about an immigrant from Yemen who is working as a doorman and want to start a business importing coffee from Yemen doesn’t do it justice. It is the amazing story of a young man committed to improving the life of coffee farmers in his home country and of someone who will literally do anything to accomplish that. Excellent read!

The Couple Next Door
by Shari Lapena

I enjoyed this book because it kept me guessing all the way to the end. The Couple Next Door is the perfect title because there are 2 couples “next door” and at first I thought it was referring to only one but by the end it made me realize it was about both. Anne and Marco are new parents and Cynthia and Graham have no children. While Anne and Marco seem somewhat reserved the other a bit more edgy, turns out they both have very big secrets which lead to infidelity, kidnapping, blackmail, and murder. I recommend this book because each character is faced with an obstacle they must face if Anne and Marco ever want to see their baby again.

The Regulators

While, in the end, I loved this book, I felt like it started in the middle of something that had been going on, and I fell a bit adrift. But it’s one of those stories that explains things after the fact, and it’s worth it so you just have to hang in there. Weird story about an autistic boy who becomes inhabited by something evil. Lots of violence, so you can’t be squeamish. The amazing thing is that the ending of this otherwise brutal book is actually very tender.

Redhead by the Side of the Road

First problem; I read the whole book and still do not know where the title came from. A single man, who is particular about the way things need to be, suddenly finds a young man on his doorstep who thinks he is his father. Sounds interesting, but I kept waiting for something to happen, and it didn't.
